What is the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)?

The Uganda Revenue Authority is the government agency responsible for tax collection and enforcement in Uganda. URA administers all national taxes including Income Tax, Value Added Tax (VAT), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Excise Duty, and Customs Duties.

What is EFRIS?

EFRIS, or the Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing System, is a digital system implemented by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) to manage and track invoices and receipts for tax purposes. It's not a tax itself, but rather a platform for issuing and recording electronic invoices and receipts, particularly those related to Value Added Tax (VAT). EFRIS aims to improve transparency, efficiency, and accountability in tax administration by streamlining the process and reducing revenue leakage.

How do I register for a Tax Identification Number (TIN)?

You can register for a TIN online via the URA portal or by visiting any URA office. Registration requires:

  • Completed TIN application form
  • Copy of national ID or passport
  • Proof of business registration (for companies)
  • phone number and email
What is VAT and who should pay it?

VAT is a consumption tax charged on the value added to goods and services. Businesses with annual taxable supplies exceeding UGX 150 million are required to register and pay VAT. VAT is currently charged at 18% on most goods and services in Uganda.

How can I file my taxes with URA?

Taxes can be filed:
